Heap Big Mighty Bug Hunter

I just have to share the funniest thing that happened with Damon earlier.

With how cold things have gotten around here (we're talking below zero a couple of times this week), and with how early this is in the year, the bugs have been doing their best to find a warm place to hide.  So we've been finding and killing bugs right and left, though the kids are generally soo freaked out they don't accomplish much except for scaring themselves and yelling for Mom or Dad.  (Can I just say...ugh...)

Along with that, Damon has begun talking more and more (probably picking up anywhere from 3-8 words a day now).  His little baby talk is sooo cute to hear, though hard to understand at times.  And like most other totally "unbiased" parents, we are convinced it is a sign of his future genius, lol.

Having said all that, when he turned around the other day to start his usual gibberish while we were working on getting his shoes taken off after being outside for something or other.  He kept lifting up his foot and saying something insistently....we just couldn't understand what.  But we smiled and encouraged (brilliant translators that we are, we kept saying "Yes, good job..that IS your foot"), and tried to move on.  John laid the little guy down to change his diaper and all of a sudden he (John) flinched and yelped slightly.  When I started to look/watch, all of a sudden I heard (clear as a bell, really) in Damon's little toddler's voice "Bug...kill....ewwwwww, slimy!" at about the same moment John growls about finding a squashed earwig.  lol, Damon was sooo proud of his moment of triumph!  He had killed the thing even daddy thought was too ewww to not flinch at!

Needless to say, ever since then Damon makes us giggle by lifting his foot to show everyone how he squished the nasty little thing....and runs every time someone yells about having found another bug!  My heap big mighty bug hunter...he is so very cute!!! :D

Jumbled Family Update

I know, I know...once again I've fallen behind.  Maybe it is time I took a slightly different approach to this: it should be an adventure to see if anyone even checks or reads this anymore since anyone who does will be pleasantly surprised by something I do sometimes?  Maybe? :D

Things have been crazy, as usual.  This summer has been filled mostly with working hard on clearing out as much excess as we can convince ourselves to, as well as re-structuring the business and how I approach getting things done.  The kids have done pretty well for themselves, though they are no doubt convinced that this has been the most boring time of their lives...I mean, we've even neglected to take them to the pool so far, and it is nearly the end of July already! Just kidding...

The boring side of this is that we once again got a double plot at the community garden, which has been even more successfully filled than in previous years...and it looks like we'll get more of a harvest too!  ("And they all cheered...yay...")  The kids have had lots of fun attempting to dig to Tibet in the sand box (not to mention testing how much sand Damon can bring home in his diaper), and Tia is thrilled that she was finally able to get some garden gloves so now she gets to help weed.  Several of the garden plots that surround us have been left empty this year (or allowed to go completely wild), so the kids have fun from time to time in helping clear out the plants that attempt to go to seed.  We are also working on getting all the weeds out of the community strawberry patch...though that made require a slightly buffer army than our little ones, we are going to take a game stab at it!  (Pictures to come, I'm sure...once we get all the weeds cleared! Hahahaha)

John and I have both had new callings given in the last week.  John is now serving as a ward missionary, and I was asked to be part of the Relief Society Enrichment Board.  Neither of us are entirely sure what all is entailed in these callings, but we are looking forward to finding out!  Oh, and two other exciting pieces of news: one: Damon hasn't had any qualms about going to nursery without Mom being there!  and two: Kieran is finally starting to work seriously on getting potty trained!  In truth, I'm most excited about Kieran (considering I've been trying to convince him to take this step for well more than a year now), but both boys are taking such big steps and I'm so excited for them...and us!

Anyway, that is the nutshell as far as my scattered brain can function right now.  I'm sure that the next time I post I'll either be much more coherent...I hope?  Have a lovely holiday weekend!

We did it!!!

We did it, we did it, we did it!

We managed to finalize our food certifications this morning and are now officially legally allowed to sell all the treats and goodies that we have been testing out with everyone over the last few months.  You'll have to come over and check it all out!  The Handmade Heritage

By the way, we are going to start offering a finder's fee to anyone who helps us find stores who we successfully negotiate sales with.  If anyone is interested, please just let us know!  I can't promise much, but with the holidays coming every little bit can help!

Family Updates

Well, school is here, summer is all but over, and we are definitely kicking into high gear!

John is still working for the Olive Garden on the swing shift, though thankfully his hours are finally getting back to closer to normal.  He is working hard helping me with all the business things (more on that to come, and no groaning...if you don't want to hear it just read the rest!) and coming up with new ideas all the time.  Plus last week our bishopric decided to shake things up a little bit and change his calling from being 2nd counselor in the Sunday School to being 1st counselor.  We keep teasing him about being promoted (before being in the Sunday School presidency he was the ward librarian and answerable to the 2nd counselor of the Sunday School), but he is doing well and really starting to grow.

Tia started the 4th grade 3 weeks ago.  I didn't think it would be (sounds a little silly even now to say), but this was actually a little bit of a shock for me: my baby is starting 4th grade and is beginning to move around between teachers!  But knowing Tia, she is taking it all in stride and loving the whole novelty of it!  At home she is still our little mother (when you can pull her out of her book that is!), and enjoys having friends who call her at home now.  Oh and the other major milestone?  Next week she is starting orchestra!  Yeah, the shock set in all right...

Caelen, my baby bear, started kindergarten 2 weeks ago...sniff, sniff.  Actually, after last year (he was in Headstart preschool which is twice as long) this has been super easy.  Except that we are having a hard time remembering what time we need to go and get him!  Terrible I know.  But in my defense, he has been having so much fun he doesn't want to come home either!

Kieran is absolutely loving school too, though in his case it is all because this way he gets mom, dad, and "his baby" all to himself for a few hours every day.  Though that is going to get more scarce now that things are starting to change with the business, it just means that there are times when he gets just mom or just dad for a little while (yeah, I know, hurt his feelings a little more...).  He has also been talking so, so, so much more clearly too!  It has been wonderful to hear his little voice now!  Especially when he is saying sweet things like "Ok, mom" and "I love you"!!!

Damon is finally starting to chunk up, though with how fast he is growing I think that is only going to be a temporary thing for a little bit yet.  But he likes all the higher calorie things I've been giving him so much, I guess that is a good thing!  In the meantime, no matter how short he is, I'm not worried at all about his mental and physical development in any other way.  He is crawling super fast (his favorite game is to play chase!), and is also cruising along the furniture or pushing things while he steps.  He is also experimenting (when he doesn't think anyone is looking) with standing all on his own!  (Yeah, one of those "Look, ma, no hands!")  I just know that before I get much more than a chance to blink my baby boy will be walking, and then look out as the chaos begins!  Ahhhhh!  I'm not ready to lose my baby yet, I only just got him!!!!

Anyway, enough with the melodrama.  I'm mostly just running my feet off trying to keep up with everyone and everything.  Between John and the kids, plus trying to clear out the house (we are having a yard sale with some of my sibs) in the next week and a half, plus getting all the food stuffs ready for sale, and getting Fall and Christmas shows scheduled/organized, plus getting all our gift packages organized, plus trying to prep a kind of catalog to distribute, plus, plus, plus,...anyone have a cloning machine?!?!?!

Anyway, that is us in a nutshell.  We hope to see you all soon, or at least hear from you sometime!

Way past due...

Alright, I know. I'm way past due for an update. So here I am working on one...

In the past month, several things have occurred. First of all, as far as my last post, we no longer have a dog. That's right, after all that (and so much more that I don't want to think about at this point), thanks to the lovely manager at the apt complex here at Hanbury Manor not representing things honestly between us and the owners we no longer have the puppy. We had to find her a new home immediately. Lesson for Rachel: never trust the manager, require full paperwork and a contact with the owners first. We still have the cat, but only because we haven't told them yet about him. The reason: I don't want to be screwed over the same as we were over the puppy. So until after next month, we are keeping mum about him.

Other things that have been occurring: The biggest has been Tia's birthday. That's right, my baby girl turned 8 on the 10th! I'm still reeling a little bit. Her baptism has been set for the April 11th at 11 am at the Logan Tabernacle, and yes family and friends are invited. We're hoping to get the invitations out in the next week. We also had a birthday party for her last weekend, which was of course insane. It didn't help much that Tia ended up inviting her entire class from school, but the kids all seemed to have a lot of fun, and I was sooo grateful for all the adults who showed up and stuck around anyway! We ended up seeing around 20-25 kids (including nieces and nephews of course), so I was terribly grateful we did things at the church. And boy, has Tia's 'little' collection of bobbleheads exploded! I think this was the year of the "My Little Pet Shop" bobbleheads, since almost all of her gifts were various critters from this collection. She of course is terribly thrilled. I wish I could catch her on tape so you all could see how she plays with them all! She's been so fun, and we absolutely love to have her as a part of the family!

One other big piece of news, then I'll end the post for now. And this is big: we just found out that we're pregnant! I'll find out the exact due date at the end of the month, so I'll let you all know then. The kids are all excited (though I don't think Kieran has figured out what he's excited about yet), and absolutely convinced we're having a girl. I don' t know, but we'll find out either way.

Anyway, more details coming soon. Sorry for the absence of posts!

"It's Alive!!!"

I know, I know. I fell severely behind in ever-thing, and the blog updates suffered the most. But at long last I'm finally getting around to posting some few things, including a plea for forgiveness? I can only plead that between the crazy holidays this year and a bout of the cold that has run through most of the family, I've been running my toes off.

The holidays were really good to us this year. For those of you that we didn't get to see, I promise that we've been thinking of you all. Not just collectively, either, though there are a lot of you at this point, I know. October started things, what with my parents moving to E. Nevada, making it possible to see them much more frequently. Then of course Caelen and I's birthdays, and Halloween, which was so much fun. To top things off, John was even able to go trick-or-treating with us this year!

Then November blew past, taking Thanksgiving with it. My grandmother had a heart attack the weekend after the holiday and my mom ended up staying in Utah to help Grandma and Grandpa with things for the next month. Then of course there was also the typical holiday social whirl, so between trying to get in to visit Grandma (and see every one else), plus desperately trying to get everything ready for Santa's late night, and the family gift exchanges...I'll just say it was crazy. Fun, emotional, and crazy. But we had tons of fun, got to see much more of family than usual, and got to really sit back and appreciate all the blessings we've been given through the birth and life of Jesus.

Aren't they cute? I was trying to keep them occupied Christmas morning long enough for John to get all the blankets off of Santa's offerings, and couldn't resist the opportunity.

I know that I say this to a lot of people in general situations, but I just want to say to each of you (family and friends alike) how grateful we are for each and everyone of you. We may not be rich in the world's view, but we are among the richest of people thanks to the blessing of being able to know you and above all thanks to the amazing knowledge and understanding that we have been given from our Heavenly Father of the things (and people) that really matter; the ones that we get to take with us vs. the things that get left behind. Please know that you are all in our prayers and hearts, and may God bless each and every one!
